Pot Committed

20 Aug 2009 08:08

I managed to get in the final table again last night after a loosing streak finishing 6th place, but I would like to discuss about another stupid play I made the day before: The blinds (150/300) and ante's (25) were already high with around 30 players left. I had 77 in middle position with a stack of 3000. I try to steal the pot preflop by making a standard raise of 3BB, hoping everyone will fold. Unfortunately the big stack in BB position called and the flop came 29K or something like that. He is a loose aggressive player and he bets out a small amount into the already big pot. I don't really believe he hit something so I want to reraise him to get some information, but doing that, I already pot commit myself having only 900 chips left. He called my raise and we checked the turn and river. He shows KJo and I'm crippled. The next hand I'm almost forced to move allin with the worst hand and I loose before the money.

Lesson learned:
Don't pot commit yourself to get information. Either move allin or fold, and in this case I better folded.

Donkey play

18 Aug 2009 08:36

Amazing how Donkey players at the table can reduce me to a Donkey player myself. After watching a LOOSE FISHY player involved in every single hand playing marginal hands, I made a call from the button with 9Ts to a minraise of this same player. when the flop came 9J and some other low card, I couldn't resist calling his continuation bet as I didn't believe he hit something. More stupidly I called his second barrel on the turn loosing a big amount of my stack. On the river an A came slowing him down by checking it to me. Weak as I am, I don't dare to make a bluf bet here as he is likely to call with a very wide range and after I check, he shows QJo and rakes the pot. That's about how bad I played the whole night yesterday reducing my bankroll even more. I hope I can control myself tonight…

Rivered Out

17 Aug 2009 11:00

The last few days I played quite a few games and I'm almost break even. Although I lost a bit, I'm happy with the way I'm playing. Almost every time I manage to get into the top 20, and when I go down, it's with honor. I remember two in particular:
One of them I had JJ and a loose caller to my preflop raise of 3BB. On the flop there was a J, giving me a set which is a dreamflop. I know my opponent might call my allin with a wide range of hands so I shove. He shows AT hitting top pair, but although it was a rainbow flop, two flush cards come on turn and river busting me out.
The other time I had AQo and again a loose caller to my preflop raise. Flop comes KTx, giving me a gutshot straight. I make a continuation bet hoping my opponent will fold, but he minraises me. I decided to call to see how he will act on the turn, and to my surprise, the J falls giving me nut straight. I move allin, he calls with AT of clubs and a flush draw. When a 3rd club falls on the river, I'm busted again!

My First Victory

13 Aug 2009 09:09

Last night I managed to end up 1st for the very first time in the 90 men Sit&Go. I was very shortstacked when the table was 6 handed, but I crawled my way back to the top making some calculated risks and before I knew, I was heads up. Heads Up I started very weak, making bad moves and trying to bluf with my bigger stack. I managed to recover and the final hand went like this: I have QTo in BB, opponent raises 3BB, I think for a while and I call. Flop comes with 3 flushcards (I don't have any) but with highest card T giving me top pair and good kicker. I figured my opponent might move allin here with a flush draw and that's what he did, I called and when no flush cards came, I ended up winning. What a nice feeling!

77 vs 22

03 Aug 2009 21:22

Played two games tonight and lost both just before the bubble. The last one I was playing pretty well until I got pocket 7 on the button. I made a standard raise of 3BB, an aggressive player who just lost a big pot from me reraised me allin. I figured I had good odds on calling this one and I was happy when I did, before the flop came… with a deuce! They all say "That's poker" but this is the part of poker I dislike most. Maybe better luck tomorrow…

A question I ask myself alot is if I should have folded this one trying to get into the bubble and cash or should I take the risk of loosing for a bigger chance to end up being first. I think the second option is the good answer as you should always go for first place because that's where the big money is.

Big Win after Loosing Streak

03 Aug 2009 13:40

Played all day long yesterday being out before the bubble until my bankroll was down to around 70$. The reasons for loosing were certainly not only being unlucky:

* Lack of concentration: Watching TV, taking care of the kids, surfing, …
* Trying my luck pushing allin with a flush draw on the flop. You should avoid as many coinflip situations as possible.
* Focusing to much on one person who just bluffed me out of a big pot
* Being afraid to bet because loosing would lower my bankroll even more…

But after a nice dinner and a quick (cold) shower I told to myself, let's not make any of those mistakes again. The second game after that I finally got into the final table and finished 3rd with a 25$ reward. The last hand I was All-in with KTo against a low pocket pair making me the small underdog and when no card hit I was out. I think I should have been a bit more patient there as the button raised and I reraised allin from BB with KT which are cards that are easily dominated.

Session Review - Bad Call and Misplaced Bluf

31 Jul 2009 11:59

First Game:
Up to 2700 with KQ vs QJ
Down by blinds with bad cards to 2000
Double up with AA to 4000
Bad call All-in to Loose Aggressive player with KQ against 66

Second Game:
Raise to 3000 with AA
Down to 1500 with misplaced bet on turn when board pair (player made set or boat or good bluf)
back to 3000 with KK (below average)
All-in with KJ vs A3

Third Game:
Flopped nut flush, beaten by boat (should have gone All-in on flop, but he would have called anyway as he flopped a set)

Last Game:
Shortstacked till 30 players left. Then lost All-in with AK vs KK vs AA.

Lessons learned:

  • Be extra patient before moving all-in. KQ and KJ are easily beaten by low pocket pair.
  • When flopping nut flush, be extra carefull when board pairs and try to control pot size.
  • After calling a raise and being reraised from a late position player, lay down you AK, you are probably beaten by AA or KK

My First Post - Current Situation

31 Jul 2009 11:53

Hello Readers,

With this blog I would like to share my experience trying to become a consistent winner of No Limit Hold'em multitable Sit&Go's. I will post my wins, failures, strategies, bad beats, suck outs, bankroll, …

Before I started playing multitable Sit&Go's I was playing mostly Tournaments. The big difference I see with Tournaments is that there are too many coinflip situations early in the Tournament because there is so many fish pushing it all in. Either you play very tight and you are too shortstacked to begin with the middle game or you loosen up and get beaten by fish or maniacs coming over the top with a worse hand and drawing you out on the river. In general people playing Sit&Go's are more experienced (there is still fish around, luckily, but not so much that it get's impossible to play one hand seeing at least the flop)
Another advantage of Sit&Go's is that you can start one whenever you like and when you run bad, you can just start a new one and try again.
